Itinerary
Itinerary
  • 1
Arrive to Cusco between 8-10 am. Try a cup of coca tea to ward off the altitude (over 11,000 feet!) or just plenty of water. We then transfer to our base in Ollantaytambo, a stunning two hour drive through the mountains and Sacred Valley. After checking in, we will be able to explore town a bit. There are two separate Inca sites nearby, one of them a KB x evo exclusive and rarely visited, the other is a short hike away which we will visit before dinner.
  • 2
Today is filled with four very different but incredible Inca sites. First we will hike through the massive Inca fortress in the center of town. Then we will drive an hour up to the Continental Divide of South America and an altitude of over 14,000 feet. From the base of a huge glacier, we will mountain bike back to town, in a thrilling downhill ride that goes past waterfalls, half hidden Inca sites and indigenous communities still living in small stone huts. After lunch we are off to see the ancient Salt Pans of Maras and the mysterious, huge stone rings at Moray. First though, we will take another exclusive KB x evo side tour to a local family’s home for a short, but unique visit far off the tourist path. This visit is done on mountain bike, adding some excitement to the day, or you can choose to take the van and then hike there instead.
  • 3
One of the least visited Inca ruins is also one of the most spectacular, and is located at the top of a mountain overlooking Ollantaytambo. It is a long and steep hike to get there, but the views are magnificent and the site itself was sacred to the Incas and has many interesting astronomical features. Today we will go on another KB x evo exclusive adventure. The people who live on this mountain are all our friends and we will stop in their home for a refreshment and authentic local experience before heading to the site. There is even an option to ride up on horse if you don’t fancy the stiff, 3,000 feet of vertical climbing!
  • 4
We go back up to the Continental Divide at Abra Malaga today, only this time we are dropping off the backside road, which plunges more than six thousand feet downhill. This ride transitions from ice fields down to the high jungle. We will see family plantations of bananas, coffee, oranges and more as we make this ride down to St. Maria on disc brake-equipped mountain bikes. Then it’s off to a natural hot spring located down river from Machu Picchu, followed by a stay at our wonderful jungle lodge surrounded by tropical birds, flowers and fruit trees.
  • 5
In the morning, we are going to do a short but fun visit to a small locally owned coffee plantation. From there we will begin the three hour hike, along the river and railroad tracks and through the jungle to arrive at Aguas Calientes. A full day of hiking with several interesting side hikes and visits along the way, approaching Machu Picchu by the least traveled route and great views from below of one of the 7 New Wonders of the World.
  • 6
Machu Picchu day! Despite all the pictures you may have seen, stories you may have heard and 'crowds' you may have worried about - absolutely nothing can prepare you for the first time you see Machu Picchu. Lush green landscaping, high on a mountain top nestled in between huge snowy peaks. Not many things in life live up to their hype, but Machu Picchu is definitely one of them. Your private guide will take you to the lesser known spots inside the park to help you get the most out of our visit. Several optional side hikes also await! In the late afternoon will take a train back to our hotel in Ollantaytambo.
  • 7
This morning we will head back to Cusco for those catching an afternoon flight, but not before making one last stop at Pisac. Famous for both their artisan craft market but, of course, yet another massive Inca archaeological site. Then you will be dropped off in Cusco, either to your hotel if you are staying longer or at the airport. This marks the end of the trip, one of the best and most active ways to spend a week in the Sacred Valley and visiting Machu Picchu.

Area Information
Machu Picchu

As one of the 7 New Wonders of the World the archaeological site, with over 200 structures surrounded by steep cliffs and tall mountain peaks, is a spectacular step back into time. Built in the fifteenth century, the site was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century and was not known to the outside world until 1911. Now sightseers can explore the site’s extensive trail and road system as they work their way around the rugged topography and agricultural terraces.

Trip Planning

Trip Planning

First, the basics - as a general rule, most things are available for purchase in Peru but nearly all of them are locally made and of poorer quality than what you may be used to. Thus, you should bring your own gear and things such as sunscreen and insect repellent.

From mid-May to mid-September, it very rarely rains. Your tour is highly likely to be sunny and dry, and very cold at night. Night temperatures are in the 40’s but feel twenty degrees colder than that due to the high altitude and moist air. Daytime temperatures are in the 70’s but feel ten degrees warmer than that due to the intense high altitude sun.

We of course cannot predict the exact weather for your trip and it does rain here frequently starting in mid-late September, so it can be a good idea to bring a rain shell.

FAQ
FAQ
  • Is my departure guaranteed?
No, KB Tambo must reach a minimum number of guests to operate each trip, please wait to make travel arrangements and book flights until you have received confirmation from KB Tambo.
  • Is Airfare Included? What is the best way to get to the trip start location?
No, airfare is not included. This trip begins and ends at the Cusco, Peru airport (CUZ). You should aim to arrive between 8AM to 10AM on Day 1 (Sunday), and depart between 3PM - 5PM on Day 7 (Saturday). A representative from KB Tambo Tours will pick you up at the airport in Cusco and drop you off there at the end of the trip. Upon booking, KB Tambo will send you a complete packet which goes into this and other aspects of your trip in great detail.
  • Do I need to be in good shape?
This is a very active trip, and fitness or adrenaline enthusiasts will get more than their fill. However, most of the biking is downhill and the steep hike up on Day 3 has a horse lift option. Thus, you do not need to be in great shape. Average or better is fine.
  • Will I have to be with the group the whole time?
KB Tambo is well known for a laid-back organizational style that often lets you feel you are on your own trip. Many people may be reluctant to take a "group tour". Trust us, we understand! We think that the combination of traveling with like-minded other folks, along with not being treated like a tourist at all, makes for a great time. But yes, you can always do a part of a day on your own schedule or go out on your own for dinner, etc.
  • Can I extend my trip?
Yes. Many people do, and KB Tambo can either give you some informal pointers, or play a more substantial part of your trip planning, whatever you prefer. The treks here are incredible and would be one such recommendation. Other common add-ons include the Amazon Jungle, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon in Arequipa, etc
  • What are the accommodations like?
All rooms are double or triple rooms, all of them with private in-room bathrooms and hot water 24/7. Your hotel in Ollantaytambo is very nice - bright, sunny, outdoor gardens and lots of space. Spend one night in a jungle ecolodge that everyone loves. And one night in Aguas Calientes, where the hotels are a bit more basic due to no road going to the town, but still nice, clean modern and private baths.
  • How many travelers are in the group?
Maximum of 10, average of 6.
  • Do I need travel insurance?
While it is not required, we always recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend World Nomads.
  • Do I need any special shots or vaccinations?
Breakfast is included each day in your hotel. Peruvian breakfasts are simple but plentiful and nourishing, usually including local fresh fruit, optional scrambled eggs or omelette, fresh local bread, and coffee or juice. Food in Peru is very good and has a great international reputation; There are options of either 'local' or 'tourist' restaurants.

Food in Peru is very good and has a great international reputation; there are options of either 'local' or 'tourist' restaurants in all the towns you will be staying in.
  • How do lunches and dinners work?
Most days are spent in and around Ollantaytambo, where there are several good restaurants serving local fresh fare, but catering to a variety of international tastes. Lunches average $5 to $7, Dinners $7 to $10. You will usually eat together as a group (the guides really do know the best places to eat) but you are welcome to go off on your own culinary adventure.
  • How much extra money should I budget?
Figure on $25 a day to eat lunch and dinner at the local restaurants, not including alcoholic beverages, which tend to greatly increase costs so factor that into your budget based on your preferences. Most people like to spend $50 to $100 on gifts for friends and family - textiles, ceramics, paintings, etc. And maybe a few hundred dollars for discretionary / emergency spending.
  • What if I’m a solo traveler, is there a single supplement to have my own room?
Yes, if you are a solo traveler there is a $295 per trip charge for single supplement in hotel. Otherwise, all rooms are double or triple rooms, all of them with private in-room bathrooms and hot water 24/7.
  • Do you have a packing list?
Yes, please see above and a complete packing list will be provided to you after booking.
  • What is the cancellation policy for this trip?
evo upholds KB Tambo’s policies regarding cancellation. If you need to cancel and submit a cancellation notice within 30 days of purchase you will receive a 100% refund. Up to 90 days prior to the trip you will receive a 75% refund. Cancellation between 90-30 days will receive a 50% refund. Within 30 days before the trip date, a 25% refund will be given.

Our expectations were exceeded with beautiful and generous accommodations, incredible mountain biking and hiking, local guides with vast knowledge regarding the Incan sites and area as well as local food. The Inca sites were incredible and the passion regarding these sites provided by KB and his team of guides really shows the character of this company.

Our guide was great because he had a great balance of fun and freedom with a solid dosage of historical/local knowledge. He always had great suggestions on food which is so, so, so important when traveling for me cause I love to eat. Good eats, gnar shredding, wifi, epic views, seeing an ancient wonder of the world Machu Picchu, and meeting lots of new great people.... I could not have asked for a better time!

Abraham was the best guide. He taught us so much about the region and the culture amidst all the fun adventures we were having… He has friends EVERYWHERE we went and really went above and beyond, finding out things we might like and offering them to us but never forcing us to do anything extra that we didn't want to do.
